Product name

Why the hundredth product name matters as much as the first

Product names are chosen under different pressure than the house name: there are many of them, they arrive on deadlines, and each one has to sell a specific item to a customer scanning a shelf or a results page.

Done one launch at a time, the catalogue drifts into a museum of moods. Done as a system, every new name lands pre-fitted: recognisably yours, clear about what it is, and distinct from its neighbours.

A product name sells before it charms

At the point of choice, clarity beats invention. The name has to say what the item is and for whom, fast enough to work in a search result, a shelf label and a basket line.

Invention still has a place, but it is rationed: spent on the hero products that carry the story, saved on the variants that need to be found.

The decisions a naming system settles

A product naming system answers the questions every launch otherwise reopens:

  • Structure: what a full product name consists of, and in which order the parts appear.
  • Register: when a name may be evocative and when it must be descriptive.
  • Variants: how sizes, shades, strengths and editions are expressed, uniformly.
  • Language: what stays in English, what is translated, and how names travel between markets.
  • Legal: which name tiers get trade mark screening and which ride the house mark.
  • Retirement: how names are reused, versioned or retired when products change.

With those settled, naming a product takes an hour instead of a meeting series, and the catalogue reads as one range instead of many decisions.

Tested where the product is chosen

Product names are judged in their habitat: in a category page among competitors, on the pack at arm's length, in a filter menu. A name that needs the ad to make sense is renamed.

And the range is tested as a range: read aloud in sequence, the way a customer meets it, so the system's rhythm shows before it ships.

How DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY names products

We start from the range architecture: what tiers exist, what each tier's name must do, and where the customer actually decides. The system is designed against real catalogue data, not example products.

We name in batches against that system, screening the tiers that need it, and we pressure-test the results in mocked-up shelf and search contexts before anything is fixed.

And we hand over the system itself: the rules, the tier definitions and a worked example set, so your team names the next hundred without us.

Why work with DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY?

We name products for brands with real catalogues, where the win is not one brilliant name but a system that keeps a growing range coherent at speed.

Let's give the range names that sell it.
