Naming

Why a name is the one brand decision that is almost impossible to undo

Everything else about a brand can be revised. A palette can be refreshed, a logo redrawn, a proposition sharpened. A name is carried by the domain, the trade mark, the packaging already in a warehouse, the retailer's system and every customer who has ever recommended you. Changing it is not a redesign, it is a relaunch.

Which is why naming deserves more rigour than it usually gets. The best names are not the cleverest ones. They are the ones that are still available, still legal, still pronounceable in the brand's export markets, and still meaningful after the tenth time someone says them out loud.

A name has to do several jobs at once

It has to be distinctive enough to register and defend, which usually means resisting the descriptive names that feel safest in a workshop. It has to be easy to say, spell and search, because a name a customer cannot type is a name that loses traffic to a competitor with better luck.

And it has to leave room. A name that describes exactly what the brand sells today becomes a constraint the moment the range extends, which is why so many businesses end up trading under a name that quietly contradicts half their catalogue.

The kinds of name a brand owns

Naming is rarely one decision. Most brands are running a small system of them:

  • Brand Names: The house name, the one that has to be registrable, defensible and durable across every category the business might enter.
  • Range Names: Collections and lines that group products into a story a customer can navigate.
  • Product Names: Individual items, where clarity usually beats invention and shelf legibility decides everything.
  • Ingredient & Technology Names: Proprietary formulations or methods, which turn a shared claim into something only you can say.
  • Sub-brands & Endorsements: How a new venture relates to the parent, and how much of the parent's equity it should carry.
  • Naming Conventions: The rules that keep the next hundred names consistent, so the system does not fracture the moment you are not in the room.

Deciding the architecture before the names is what stops a catalogue turning into a collection of unrelated decisions made two years apart.

Screened before you fall in love with it

Every candidate is checked early rather than late: trade mark availability in the relevant classes and territories, domain and social handle availability, and linguistic screening in the languages the brand will trade in. A name that fails any of these is removed before anyone gets attached to it.

That sequencing matters more than it sounds. The most expensive naming projects are the ones where a favourite is chosen first and screened second, and the whole process restarts three weeks in with a team that has already decided what it wants.

How DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY names

We start from strategy, not from a word list. What territory should the name stake out? What does it have to make room for? Which of its neighbours is it trying not to sound like? Those constraints do most of the work, and they make it possible to judge a name against something other than taste.

We generate broadly and cut hard, across several distinct routes rather than variations on one idea, so the shortlist represents genuinely different strategic bets. Candidates are screened in parallel with development, so what reaches you is available as well as good.

Names are presented in context, on a pack, in a headline, in a sentence spoken aloud, because a name on a slide is judged as a word and a name in market is judged as an experience. Alongside it comes the rationale, the screening status and the naming convention for everything that follows.

Why work with DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY?

We name for beauty, fashion and lifestyle brands, where a name has to work on a small pack, in a retailer's listing, in a search box and in a founder's sentence, often in several languages at once. Getting all of that right is a process, and process is what separates a name you can register from a name you merely like.
