Design system
Why consistency at speed needs components, not vigilance
Guidelines describe the brand; a design system builds it into the tools. Colours become tokens, type becomes styles, patterns become components, and being on brand stops depending on everyone remembering the PDF.
The difference shows at speed. When a landing page is needed by Thursday, the team with a system assembles it from parts that are already right; the team without one chooses between slow and off-brand.
Tokens first, components second
Tokens are the brand's decisions stored as values: colour, type, spacing and radius named once and referenced everywhere, so a brand refresh becomes an update rather than a hunt.
Components are the working parts built from them: buttons, cards, forms and navigation that carry the identity and its accessibility rules inside, tested against real content.
And patterns are the sentences those words make: how a product page, an article or a checkout composes, so whole screens are assembled rather than designed from zero.
One source, both crafts
The system lives in design and code as one thing: the Figma library and the component library reference the same tokens, so what designers place is what ships.
Governance is designed in rather than hoped for: who may change a token, how a component is proposed, and how versions roll out, in a rhythm a small team can actually keep.
How DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY approaches design systems
We start from an audit of what the screens actually use: every colour, size and variant currently in production. The distance between that list and the guidelines is the work, stated honestly.
We build the token set and the core components first and prove them by rebuilding a real page, because a system that has never shipped a page is a theory.
Then we extend by demand rather than ambition: components join the system when a real need arrives, which keeps the library lean enough to trust.
Why work with DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY?
We build design systems as the digital half of the identities we design, so the system expresses the brand rather than a framework's defaults with your logo on top.
And we size the system to the team that will run it. A system is infrastructure; the right one is the one your team maintains without us.
Consistency, industrialised
A design system is the brand made buildable. It is how the identity survives speed, scale and staff changes at the same time.
Let's make the identity buildable.
