Brand architecture

Why a portfolio needs a structure before it needs another logo

Every growing company reaches the same moment: a new product, a new market or an acquisition arrives, and nobody can say whether it should carry the main brand, get its own, or sit somewhere in between. Each answer is improvised, and five improvisations later the portfolio confuses the people it was built for.

Brand architecture is the discipline of answering that question once. It sets the structure that every future launch inherits, which is cheaper and calmer than debating each one from scratch.

One structure, three honest options

A branded house puts everything under one name and multiplies every marketing euro across the whole portfolio. It is the strongest option when the audiences overlap and the promise holds everywhere.

A house of brands gives each proposition its own name and its own room to mean something, at the cost of building each one separately. It earns its keep when audiences or price points genuinely conflict.

Most companies live between the two, and the in-between is where discipline matters most: endorsements, descriptors and sub-brands need rules, or every product manager invents a new tier.

Decided by evidence, not preference

The structure follows the customer's logic, not the org chart. How people actually shop, what they believe travels between categories, and where the existing brand helps or harms: that is the evidence the architecture is built on.

And it is decided with the economics on the table. Every additional brand is a permanent cost line; the architecture states what each name must earn to justify existing.

How DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY approaches brand architecture

We map the portfolio as customers meet it: every name, logo, range and descriptor currently in circulation, and what each one is silently claiming. The map alone usually settles half the argument.

We design the target structure with the leadership team: the levels, the naming logic, the rules for endorsement, and the honest migration path from what exists to what should.

And we write it as a working document: decision trees for the next launch, naming rules, and the visual logic per level, so the architecture survives the meeting it was agreed in.

Why work with DUTCH DESIGN AGENCY?

We treat architecture as a commercial decision that happens to be expressed in design. The structure is argued in customer behaviour and cost, then made visible in identity, in that order.

And we build it to be used by non-designers: the test of an architecture is whether a product manager can place next year's launch without calling a meeting.

The launch after next

Architecture is judged by the decisions it makes easy later. A clear structure turns every future launch from a debate into a placement.
